as i walked down the bustling streets of downtown vancouver this morning i was appalled to see so many homeless people sleeping on benches, and more so, people sleeping under a sleeping blanket with their dogs.
when did society become so cruel to those so needy? as i'm walking down the street in my $200 shoes, listening to my $150 discman, and drinking my nonfat latte, i kept reminding myself just how lucky i am. a couple of the people were starting to rouse from their restless slumbers. i noticed some of them were talking to themselves and acting in what i would call a peculiar fashion.
how many of these homeless people are mentally ill? lets recall: 2000 (or roughly), the woodlands final shut down, realesing thousands of mentally ill people onto the street with no medication. a little while before that, another major institution shuts down due to a lack of government funding. releasing once again, thousands of mentally ill people, leaving them to die, or worse, to roam the streets of vancouver.
oh, government funding. this is a good one. bc finished having about a 2 week long teacher strike. teachers were legislated to go back to work, but hundreds stayed out to walk the pickett line. now the government has awarded them $40 million dollars to send these teachers cheques for time missed.
yet sick people don't get their meds.
on top of that, the liberal government steals something atrocious like 48 MILLION dollars from us for their own devices.
still homeless mentally ill people on the streets.
when does it end?
